Reformer Pilates is our most popular option here at our Willoughby Studio on the North Shore. There are literally hundreds of exercises one can perform on a Reformer machine. What is Pilates Reformer?

Pilates Reformer is a full-body training method performed on a spring-loaded machine designed to create resistance and instability. The moving carriage introduces a constantly shifting point of reference, which challenges your body to maintain control and alignment throughout each exercise.

Unlike traditional ground-based workouts—where your body moves against a stable, two-dimensional surface—the Reformer provides a more dynamic and responsive environment. This instability gives your brain and body more sensory feedback and multiple points of reference, enhancing neuromuscular coordination and deep core activation. The instability of the moving carriage, the different platforms you can stand, kneel or lay on create a multi-sensory and motor challenge that engages the central nervous system in a way that static, ground-based training does not.

Since we are boffins about this, we’d like to add that traditional exercises performed on stable surfaces provide limited proprioceptive input – typically within fixed points of contact. In contrast, the Reformer’s mobile platform shifts the body’s reference points, requiring continuous recalibration of join positioning, force output and postural control! This stimulates greater neuromuscular integration, especially through deep stabilising systems like the transverse abdominus, multifidus and pelvic floor (think deep abdonminals and pelvic floor!)

As a result, Reformer Pilates enhances :

  • Sensorimotor feedback loops
  • Intermuscular coordination
  • Postural alignment and core stability under load
  • Dynamic jlint control through a full range of motion

It is highly effective for injury prevention, post-rehailitation and athletic conditoning, as it reinforces efficient movement patterns, reduces compensatory strategies, and trains the body to respond to adaptively changing mechanical demands.

So YES – Pilates is INTELLIGENT Exercise, and the result is smarter, highly effective and efficient movement modality that improves strength, flexibility, balance, and posture – with results that last.
